Opposition/Abstention: Five countries voted against the endorsement: the Czech Republic, Hungary, Israel, Poland, and the United States. Twelve countries abstained, including Australia, Austria, and Chile.
E-Petitions and the UK Government
In the United Kingdom, significant public campaigns and e-petitions were launched to pressure the government not to sign the Compact.
One petition titled "The UK should not agree the UN's Global Compact for Migration" garnered over 131,000 signatures.
The "Marrakesh Compact" refers to the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), which was formally adopted by 164 nations at an intergovernmental conference in Marrakech, Morocco, on December 10, 2018. It was later endorsed by the UN General Assembly on December 19, 2018.
